Additional Industry Events To Complement The Forestry Harvesting Demo

Through support from Forestry Commission Scotland, Scottish Enterprise and Dumfries and Galloway Council a series of events to complement the Harvesting Demo have been organised. These aim to enhance the experience of those visiting Dumfries and Galloway to attend the Demo. All the events are free but, because of number limitations and catering, attendance must be booked in advance.

Wednesday 14 May - Sawmill Visits, James Jones & Sons, Lockerbie Tours at 1pm and 4pm

An opportunity to tour this ultra-modern sawmill led by James Jones staff. Numbers are limited to 40 people per tour. Hard hats and high-viz vests will be provided but please bring your own if you have them.

Thursday 15 May - Demo Debate, Queen’s Hotel, Lockerbie 5.30pm for 6 - 8.30pm

This year’s debate will consider ‘Timber Harvesting - Payment through the Head or by the Tonne?’ Speakers from the Forestry Commission, management companies, timber processors and the contract harvesting sector will debate this subject in front of an audience expected to have a strong representation of harvesting contractors attending the Demo. Free buffet.

Saturday 17 May - Demo Conference, Barony College, Parkgate 9 for 9.30am - 12 noon

The Conference will provide some stimulating discussion on forestry safety and timber haulage. Gillian Clark, Chief Executive of FISA will give an update on the progress being made by the safety working groups and Roland Stiven of the Timber Transport Forum will address the important role timber hauliers play in a sustainable forest industry. A number of timber haulage equipment manufacturers will have stands in the college grounds for the day. Free buffet lunch.

Saturday 17 May - Power Plant Visits, E.ON, Lockerbie Tours at 2pm and 3pm

An opportunity to tour E.ON’s 44 Megawatt biomass power station which consumes 500,000 tonnes of forest produce annually and generates enough electricity to power 70,000 homes. Each tour can accommodate up to 25 people. E.ON will provide all hard hats and high-viz vests.
